Miami Marlins Custom Fitted Cap

The 1955 Chiefs, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, finished only two games out of the playoffs, but drew only 85,000 fans, last in the eight-team league. In the Marlins' debut season in Miami, the club finished third and attracted 288,000 spectators, second in the IL circuit. Attendance dwindled in the years that followed, however, and by 1960 the Marlins were at the bottom of the IL, with fewer than 110,000 paying fans. The franchise moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1961, but after little more than a month of play the Marlins moved again to Charleston, West Virginia on May 19. In 1962, the franchise moved to Atlanta, Georgia. In 1966, when the Milwaukee Braves moved to Atlanta, the franchise relocated to Richmond, Virginia, where it played as the Richmond Braves for 43 seasons, through 2008. The franchise is scheduled to move to Gwinnett County, Georgia in 2009.[1] The current Syracuse Chiefs club, reformed in 1961, is actually the transplanted Montreal Royals.

Notable Marlins during the 1956-60 period were Leroy "Satchel" Paige, the great former Negro Leagues pitcher then in his 50s, three-time league all-star infielder Forrest "Woody" Smith, 1959 IL earned run average champ Artie Kay, and future big-leaguers, infielder Jerry Adair and pitcher Rudy Arias. On August 7, 1956, the largest crowd in minor league history (57‚000) came to see Miami's 50-year-old Satchel Paige beat Columbus at the Orange Bowl.

Vernon Tigers Custom Fitted

The Vernon Tigers were a minor league baseball team which played in the Pacific Coast League from 1909 through 1925. Vernon, California was and is a small town in Los Angeles County. The Tigers, together with the Sacramento Solons, joined the PCL as new teams in 1909 as the league expanded from four teams to six. The Tigers effectively were a second team in Los Angeles, rivals of the existing Los Angeles Angels. Why Vernon, a small town? Simply because Vernon was one of only two cities in Los Angeles County that was “wet” (i.e., where the sale and consumption of alcohol was legal)! All other incorporated cities within the county were "dry" by statute, and alcohol was illegal in the unincorporated areas of the county as well.

Vernon used its "wet" distinction to its advantage. The largest enterprise in the town at the time was Doyle's bar, advertised as the "longest bar in the world" with 37 bartenders. Doyle was also a sports promoter, building an arena where world championship boxing matches were held. Tigers owner Edward Maier built Maier Park, home field of the Tigers, next to Doyle's bar, which had its own entrance to the park.

The Vero Beach Dodgers were a Florida State League minor league baseball team that existed from 1980 to 2006. Located in Vero Beach, Florida, they were affiliated with the Los Anglels Dodgers. From 2006 to 2008, they were called the Vero Beach Devil Rays. The Vero Beach teams played their home games at historic Holman Stadium at Dodgertown.

White Elephant Custom Fitted Cap

The "Athletics" name originates from the late 19th century "athletic clubs", specifically the Athletic of Philadelphia. They are most prominently nicknamed "the A's", in reference to the blackletter "A", a trademark of the team and the old Athletics of Philadelphia. This has gained very prominent use, and in some circles is used more frequently than the full "Athletics" name. They are also known as "the White Elephants" or simply "the Elephants", in reference to then New York Giants' manager John McGraw's calling the team a "white elephant". This was embraced by the team, who then made a white elephant the team's mascot, and often incorporated it into the logo or sleeve patches.

Oakland Oaks Custom Fitted Cap

The Oakland Oaks were a minor league baseball team in Oakland, California that played in the Pacific Coast League from 1903 through 1955, after which the club transferred to Vancouver, British Columbia. The team was named for the city and used the oak tree and the acorn as its symbols.

In 1916, a struggling Oaks team made history by (inadvertently) breaking the professional baseball color line, as Jimmy Claxton pitched in both ends of a double-header on May 28th, 1916. He was introduced to the team as an American Indian, but once the team discovered that his ancestry was both Native American and African, he was fired.

Back on the East Coast

Ok, for you that check me out here, you may have noticed that I have not posted for a bit. Well that's because I'm back on the East coast now. So now that I'm done moving you must check the blog for more custom fitteds and the store will be up shortly for you that still have some loot to spend. Plus some Trunk sales in NYC planned. I also have some short run hand screened tee-shirts that I will be posting on the site as well.

Thanks to all that have offered their support. Now that I'm back home, I'll be swinging for the fence!

Venice Tigers Fitted Custom Cap

In 1913 and 1914, the Tigers played in the oceanside community of Venice, and were known as the Venice Tigers during those seasons. Not coincidentally, Venice was the only other "wet" city in Los Angeles County. On Sundays and special holidays, in which alcohol sales were not permitted, the Tigers played their home games at Washington Park, which was primarily the Angels' home field. The team did not draw well in Venice, and the Tigers moved back to Vernon in 1915.

New York IRT Custom Fitted Cap

New York IRT, also known as IRT F.C., was an early twentieth century American soccer team sponsored by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company.

The origins of the team are unknown, but in 1916, it entered the New York State Association Football League. In 1918, it went to the fourth round of the 1918 National Challenge Cup where it fell to Paterson F.C. In 1919, New York IRT entered the National Association Football League, but withdrew after only five games.

Brooklyn Longfellows Custom Fitted Cap

The Brooklyn Longfellows played in the New York State League. They lost to the Fall River East Ends in the 1891 American Cup.

San Diego Sockers Custom Fitted

The San Diego Sockers were one of the most successful indoor soccer teams in the sport's short history. The team won ten championships in both the original Major Indoor Soccer League and the North American Soccer League.

The team began as the Baltimore Comets in 1974 but moved to San Diego as the San Diego Jaws in 1976. After a one year stay in Las Vegas as the Las Vegas Quicksilvers, the team returned as the San Diego Sockers in 1978.

The San Diego Sockers, one of the most successful indoor soccer teams in a number of national leagues, kicked off in 1974 as the Baltimore Comets. Within a year, the team packed up for a cross country move to San Diego where they were renamed the San Diego Jaws. After a few rocky seasons, the Jaws departed for Las Vegas in 1977 but moved back to San Diego in 1978, where they were finally dubbed the San Diego Sockers.

Initially, victories came slowly for the San Diego Sockers but mounted quickly. With a building fan base and budding talent pool, the San Diego Sockers won the North American Soccer League (NASL) Championships of 1982 and again in 1984. Success was far from over for the San Diego Sockers. When the NASL folded, the San Diego Sockers moved to the Major Indoor Soccer League and won eight championships: 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1992. The San Diego Sockers carried their success from one league to the next. They switched to the Continental Indoor Soccer League for three more years from 1993 to 1995. However, after several ownership changes, the San Diego Sockers folded after the 1996 season.

Baltimore Blast Custom Fitted

As a kid I remember watching channel 45 after school and the Blast commercials would come on. They were loud and fast and so where the games. Good times. Here's some info.

The Baltimore Blast were a longtime member of the original MISL. From 1978/79-79/80, the team was the Houston Summit but moved prior to the 1980/81 season. The team won the league's championship in 1984. The team folded when the MISL ceased operation in the summer of 1992. The team used the Kool & The Gang classic "Celebration" after scoring goals.

By the 1984-85 season, the Lakers' so-called "Showtime"era was in full swing. Showtime was a fast-paced style of basketball, described as a mix of "no-look passes off the fastbreak, pin-point alley-oops from halfcourt, spinning feeds and overhand bullets under the basket through triple teams.

Len Bias Custom Fitted Cap

Leonard Kevin Bias (November 18, 1963 – June 19, 1986) was an American college basketball player who suffered a fatal cardiac arrhythmia that resulted from a cocaine overdose less than 48 hours after being selected by the Boston Celtics in the 1986 NBA Draft. Bias was the second player selected in the draft, after Brad Daugherty of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Wearing number 34, Bias impressed basketball fans with his amazing leaping ability, his physical stature and his ability to create plays and considered one of the most dynamic players in the nation. By his senior year, scouts from the various National Basketball Association viewed Bias as the most complete forward in the Class of 1986. Bias was favorably compared by some to Michael Jordan, even though Jordan himself was only in his second professional season with the Chicago Bulls at the time Bias was drafted by the Boston Celtics.

I've always been a big Terps fan and Bias was by far my favorite college player at that time. What a loss.

Brookyln Bridegrooms Custom Fitted Cap

The Los Angeles Dodgers franchise started in 1884 as the Brooklyn Atlantics of the American Association, then became the Brooklyn Grays for the 1885-1887 seasons, and then became the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. The franchise were the Bridegrooms from 1888-1890, and then from 1896-1898. From 1891 to 1895, the team dropped the Bride part of their nickname, and played as the Brooklyn Grooms.

Brooklyn Americans Custom Fitted Cap

The New York Americans team's name for the 1941-42 NHL season changed to the Brooklyn Americans. Dutton ( owner) had every intent on moving the team to Brooklyn, but due to a lack of a decent arena, the Brooklyn Americans continued to play their home games in Manhattan at Madison Square Garden while practicing in Brooklyn. They barely survived the season, finishing with a record of 16-29-3. After the season, the Amerks suspended operations for the war's duration. However, in 1946, the NHL reneged on promises to reinstate the Americans and canceled the franchise. Although Dutton had every intention of returning the Americans to the ice after World War II, NHL records list the Americans as having "retired" from the league in 1942.

The Cavaliers first began play in the NBA in 1970 as an expansion team under the ownership of Nick Mileti. Playing their home games at Cleveland Arena under the direction of head coach Bill Fitch, they compiled a league-worst 15–67 record. The team hoped to build around the number one 1971 draft pick Austin Carr who had set numerous scoring records at Notre Dame, but Carr severely injured his leg shortly into his pro career and did not recover sufficiently to become a great pro player.

The following seasons saw the Cavaliers gradually improve their on-court performance, thanks to season-by-season additions of talented players such as Bingo Smith, Jim Chones, Jim Cleamons and Dick Snyder. Cleveland improved to 23–59 in their sophomore season, followed by a 32–50 record in 1972–73, and a small step backwards to 29–53 in 1973–74. In 1974, the Cavaliers moved into the brand-new Richfield Coliseum, located in the cornfields thirty miles south of downtown Cleveland in Summit County. That season, the Cavaliers finished with a 40–42 record, falling just short of a playoff berth.

In the 1975-76 season with Carr, Smith, Chones, Snyder, and newly acquired Nate Thurmond; Fitch led the Cavaliers to a 49–33 record and a division title. Fitch received the league's Coach of the Year award as the Cavs made their first-ever playoff appearance.

The Cavs won the series against the Washington Bullets, 4–3. Because of the many heroics and last-second shots, the series became known locally as the "Miracle of Richfield." However, hampered by injuries, particularly to Jim Chones, the Cavs proceeded to lose to the Boston Celtics in Eastern Conference Finals of the NBA playoffs.

Cleveland won 43 games the next two seasons (1976–77 and 1977–78), but both those seasons resulted in early playoff exits. After a 30–52 season in 1978-79, Fitch resigned as head coach. The following season, after going 37–45 under Fitch's successor Stan Albeck, original owner Mileti sold his shares to minority owner Joe Zingale.

Chicago American Giants Custom Fitted

Chicago American Giants were a Chicago based Negro League baseball team, formed by player-manager Andrew "Rube" Foster. From 1910 until the mid-1930s, the American Giants were the most dominant team in black baseball. Charter members of Foster's Negro National League, the American Giants won five pennants in that league, along with another pennant in the 1932 Negro Southern League and a second-half championship in Gus Greenlee's Negro National League in 1934. The team was disbanded in 1952.

The Baltimore Pirates booked games in 1932 and 1933 against area amateur, semipro and minor league teams. The team developed a reputation for high entertainment. As a way to increase interest, they changed their name in 1934 to the Silver Moons.
